Metal vs Resin vs Nylon Zippers Compared

Author: Weiwei Zipper

The choice between metal, resin, and nylon zippers is often made on looks, but it holds up better when it starts from where the zipper sits and what it has to survive. The look can then be chosen within the material that fits.

All three come in the common sizes 3, 5, and 8. What differs is how the teeth are made, and that changes weight, flexibility, and wear.

The three materials at a glance

MaterialTeeth and lookStrengthsCommon positions
MetalIndividual metal teeth with a hardware finish: silver, gold, antique brass, or antique bronzeStrong, hard-wearing, premium in lookJeans, workwear, bags, footwear
ResinIndividual molded plastic teeth, bold in shape and available in many colorsLighter than metal, does not rust, holds up outdoorsJackets, outerwear, children's wear, shoes
NylonA continuous coil, low-profile and color-matched to the tapeLightest and most flexible, runs smoothly, follows curvesPockets, bag linings, sun-protective jackets

Metal zippers

Each tooth on a metal zipper is a separate piece of metal clamped onto the tape. That construction makes metal the strongest and most hard-wearing of the three, and it gives the zipper a visible hardware finish that often becomes part of the design.

Metal is also the heaviest and stiffest option. It suits positions that take load and abrasion: jean flies, workwear, bags, and boots. Two things to weigh are the extra weight on light fabrics and moisture, since metal teeth can tarnish or corrode with long exposure, which matters for outdoor and marine use.

Resin zippers

A resin zipper has plastic teeth molded one by one onto the tape. The teeth are bold and chunky, and because they are molded, they can be produced in a wide range of colors to match a garment.

Resin is lighter than metal, does not rust, and holds up well to weather, which is why it is common on jackets, outerwear, and outdoor wear. It is also a practical choice for children's wear and lighter shoes, where weight and color matching both matter. It is stiffer than nylon, so it is less suited to tight curves.

Nylon zippers

The teeth of a nylon zipper are a continuous coil sewn or woven onto the tape. That makes nylon the lightest and most flexible of the three: it runs smoothly, bends with soft fabrics, and follows curves such as the rounded corners of a bag.

Nylon also forgives small faults. If a coil tooth slips out of line, running the slider past it will often bring it back. It is a natural fit for pockets, bag linings, sun-protective jackets, and lightweight garments. Its low profile keeps the zipper in the background; if you want the zipper to be seen, metal or resin says more.

Choosing by position

When a product has several zippers, the answer can differ by position:

  • Jacket front: resin for a bold, weather-ready look; metal for a premium or workwear style; nylon for light jackets and sun-protective wear.
  • Pockets: nylon for a clean, flexible finish; metal where the pocket is a design feature.
  • Bags: metal for visible, heavy-use openings; nylon for curved seams and inner compartments.
  • Footwear: metal for boots and heavy-wear styles; resin for lighter shoes.
  • Children's wear: resin or nylon, both light and easy to color-match.

Size comes next

Once the material is set, choose the size. Sizes 3, 5, and 8 correspond to a closed chain width of about 3, 5, and 8 mm, and the same position logic applies: lighter positions take smaller sizes. Our size guide goes through the choice, the guide to the parts of a zipper explains the terms, and how to measure zipper length covers the last dimension.

Try two before you commit

If two materials both seem to fit, sample both. Sampling for standard specifications usually takes about 3 days, and seeing the two side by side on your own fabric settles the question faster than any description.

Conclusion

Metal gives strength and a hardware finish, resin gives a bold look in many colors with good weather resistance, and nylon gives the lightest, most flexible zipper. Start from the position, then choose the look within the material that suits it.
